Just bear in mind that to get rid of it once and for all, you must dig out its rhizome root structure and destroy it. Even if just a small piece remains in the ground, it will grow again.

Where DSV is established in a location and seems to be holding itself in reasonable check, consider leaving it alone. You could do more harm than good by bothering it. If it is rampant, then, short of the most extreme measures, you can’t do anything about it anyway.

Attack only where there is a small to moderate amount of DSV, or a fresh outbreak, and you are sure you can win. If you are not sure you can win, then you must at least commit to strict ongoing control. Otherwise, you will likely make matters worse. This after all is a vine, and the more you cut back a vine without destroying it, or at least constantly undermining it, the more vigorous it becomes.

So, if you decide to go after a patch with a weed-whacker or garden-shears, do it at every opportunity. Don’t give it a chance to recover.

Mid to late-spring is a good time to attack DSV. It is easily recognized then, and if you don’t get rid of all of it, you’ll get a second shot, or more, that same year.

If, when each time DSV comes back, you see it is weaker than before, you are winning. If it comes back stronger, the best you may be able to do is hold it back. In the long term, biological control of DSV offers the best hope, but that is likely a long way off.

As stated, DSV is easily recognized but can be confused early in the season with plants like belladonna and honeysuckle vine, so be careful. Leaves of DSV emerge as opposite pairs and are quite pointed. The newest leaves at the tip of the vine are often shinier than the rest.

DSV does not grow on the past season’s stems but sprouts afresh each spring from its rhizome root system. In fall, feathered seeds are borne by the wind for wider dispersal. The seeds germinate readily in broken ground and appear to be unaffected by the freeze/thaw cycle.

In fall, try to prevent seed dispersal from any DSV that cannot be removed, though do let it set seed. If you don’t, you will encourage the rootstock to grow stronger, for that’s where a seedless plant directs its energy.

Once the pods have turned yellow and look set to split open, thus allowing the feathered seeds to float away on the autumn breeze, cut down the plants and their pods and destroy them. Do not compost them or put them in the garbage. Burn them or let your city compost them at its depots.

Talk about DSV with neighbours. Some, especially the elderly or infirm, may need help in combating it and preventing its spread.

If you have had success in fighting DSV and feel that you can help others do the same, please email dogstranglingvine@gmail.com with information as to how you did it. We will publicize your comments, leaving out personal identification unless you prefer it.
